Competitor: Confluence

Notion vs Confluence Battlecard: Win on Simplicity and AI-Ready Knowledge, Not on Jira Depth

1. Bottom line

Notion wins when the buyer is not already deep in Jira and wants one workspace for docs, wikis, projects and AI agents at a lower admin burden. Confluence wins when the buyer runs engineering on Jira, needs self-managed or heavily regulated deployment options, or needs very large single-site scale (Atlassian cites 150k users on a single Confluence site). The single most useful seller move is to ask early how much of the buyer's knowledge work actually lives in Jira, then steer Atlassian-centric buyers toward the cloud-migration and cost questions and non-Atlassian buyers toward a simple, all-in-one workspace. Pricing is closer than most sellers assume, so do not lead with "cheaper" (see section 4).

2. Competitor overview

For context, Notion (our side) was valued at $11 billion in a December 2025 tender offer, has not raised outside capital since October 2021, and reached $500 million ARR in 2025.

3. Target customers

For comparison, Notion's pricing page shows OpenAI, Figma, Volvo, Ramp and Cursor as customer logos, and CNBC says Notion is used by more than half of the Fortune 500.

4. Pricing and packaging

Third-party sources disagree on Confluence's per-user prices, and I could not load Atlassian's own pricing page (it returned an empty body). Quote a range and tell the buyer to confirm in the quote.

6. Strengths to respect

7. Weaknesses with evidence

Treat these as themes buyers report, not proof about any one customer. Most come from third-party review summaries.

Weakness Evidence Frequency signal
Slow, cluttered interface and performance on large pages or spaces Toolradar lists "UI cluttered and slow" and "Performance issues" as cons. One GetApp reviewer reports performance problems with larger pages or heavily populated spaces Recurs across two sources; the GetApp item is a single review
Poor search on large knowledge bases Toolradar lists "Search often poor". SaaSFlags cites Reddit complaints about search quality Two aggregator sources; low weight
Content gets messy One reviewer says it can get cluttered very quickly; Toolradar lists "Can become messy" Single review plus editorial list
Permissions complexity GetApp feature analysis (451 reviews, July 2021 to October 2024) notes permissions may require technical support Older data; sample is a subset
Cost at scale GetApp's listed cons include high and escalating costs; Toolradar lists "Expensive for cloud" Two sources
Server-to-Cloud migration friction SaaSFlags notes migration frustration. Atlassian itself is ending Data Center sales and support One aggregator; inference that this creates buyer disruption
Dated editor compared with newer tools SaaSFlags, citing G2, says the editor is viewed as dated versus Notion, Coda and Slab Single aggregator; low weight

KEY TAKEAWAY: The most repeatable complaints are speed, search and clutter, but each rests on third-party summaries, so frame them as questions to the buyer, not as claims about Confluence.

8. Recent moves

Date Move What it means for deals
8 September 2025 Atlassian announced the end of Data Center: no new customers from 30 March 2026, expansions end 30 March 2028, end of life 28 March 2029 Self-managed Confluence buyers face a forced cloud decision, which opens the door to evaluating alternatives. Atlassian offers migration programs, so expect a counter-offer
30 October 2025 Q1 FY26 revenue $1.4 billion, cloud revenue $998 million (teaser figures; full letter not opened) Atlassian is financially strong; do not suggest vendor instability
11 March 2026 About 10% workforce reduction, roughly 1,600 employees, to fund AI and enterprise sales Inference: possible support and account-team disruption. Ask the buyer about their service experience, do not assert it
March 2026 Atlassian reorganizing around "System of Work" and Collections Bundling may affect packaging and price; ask the buyer for their current quote
19 May 2026 (Notion) Notion ranked No. 10 on the CNBC Disruptor 50; about half of business and enterprise customers pay for AI features Supports Notion's AI momentum story

Acquisitions, outages and job-posting signals were not researched in this run (see section 12).

9. Win themes

  1. One workspace for docs, projects and AI agents. Notion's pricing page lists databases, Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and Custom Agents in one product. CNBC reports about half of business and enterprise customers pay for AI features.
  2. Lower friction for non-engineering teams. Confluence reviewers cite clutter, slow performance and permissions complexity; Notion's own packaging puts page verification and private teamspaces on the Business plan.
  3. Security and compliance parity for cloud buyers. Notion publishes SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA support with a BAA, plus SCIM, audit log and zero data retention with AI providers on Enterprise.
  4. Cloud-only simplicity versus a migration decision. Data Center buyers must move by March 2029; a move is a natural point to compare platforms.
  5. Predictable stack cost (inference). Seat price favors Confluence, so use a total-cost view: how many tools Notion replaces and what Atlassian AI and add-ons would cost. Ask for the buyer's current invoices. No source I read quantified Rovo pricing.

10. Objection handling

Objection Response Evidence
"Confluence is cheaper per seat." Agree on list price at the entry tier, then move to total cost: tools replaced, admin time, and AI add-ons on each side. Ask the buyer to price both with AI included. Entry price $5.42 to $6.40 versus Notion $10; GetApp lists high and escalating costs as a con
"We already use Jira, so Confluence fits." Fair. Ask what share of docs work happens outside engineering, and whether Notion's Jira connection is enough for the Jira-dependent teams. Reviewers rate Jira integration 4.7; Notion lists Jira link previews and sync
"Atlassian is bigger and safer." Scale is real. Notion also reports 100M+ users, more than half of the Fortune 500 and $500M ARR in 2025 and publishes SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001. Atlassian: 300,000+ customers
"We need FedRAMP, single-tenant or self-managed." Concede. Do not compete on this requirement unless Notion's current offerings are confirmed with the buyer's security team. Government Cloud and Isolated Cloud
"Atlassian has Rovo AI across our tools." Compare on the buyer's own workflows in a pilot. Notion's AI is included in Business, with Custom Agents charged by credits. Rovo 5M MAU (company claim); Notion pricing
"Notion is newer and may not scale." Ask for the specific scale need. Notion lists unlimited page history and audit log on Enterprise. Confluence's stated site limit is 150k users, so scale beyond that is a Confluence-side advantage. Notion pricing; Atlassian

11. Landmine questions

  1. "What share of your documentation is written by people who do not use Jira?" Works because Confluence's advantage is tied to Jira; the answer sizes the non-Jira audience. Evidence: Jira is its top-rated integration.
  2. "How quickly can a new hire find the right answer in your current wiki?" Surfaces the search and clutter themes. Evidence: Toolradar's cons and SaaSFlags' Reddit-sourced search complaint. Use it as a question, not a claim.
  3. "Are you on Data Center today, and what is your plan for 2029?" Works because Data Center reaches end of life on 28 March 2029.
  4. "What did your last Atlassian renewal look like, and does it include the AI tier you want?" Probes cost escalation. Evidence: GetApp's cost-related cons. AI is listed under Premium.
  5. "How many separate tools do your teams use for docs, tasks and meeting notes?" Supports the one-workspace theme with Notion's bundled features.
