NHC raises Gulf disturbance AL92 to 80% formation odds
Status and footprint: In its 8 PM EDT Oct 5 Tropical Weather Outlook, NHC said a trough over the southwestern Gulf (AL92) is producing disorganized showers and storms. It expects a tropical depression to form mid-week, with the system drifting east-northeast before turning north. NHC called it too early to determine specific northern Gulf Coast impacts. Formation chance is 70% through 48 hours and 80% through seven days. No track cone or watches exist yet.
Change versus prior figure: CiberCuba, reporting the NHC's earlier Oct 5 bulletin (secondhand), cited 10% at 48 hours and 50% at seven days. That is a rise of 60 points at 48 hours and 30 points at seven days. Independent forecasters are split on outcome: The Eyewall (Oct 5) sees a likely track between southeast Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle and its own estimate of about a 30% chance of a hurricane, while AccuWeather puts the hurricane chance at 15% and projects 4 to 8 inches of rain from New Orleans through the Panhandle. Both are forecaster views, not NHC products.
Insured-loss estimates: none found from Verisk PCS, Karen Clark, Moody's RMS, CoreLogic, Aon or Gallagher Re as of Oct 6. Any early figure would be preliminary. Carrier exposure: Everest Group, RenaissanceRe, Universal Insurance Holdings and Munich Re: no disclosure found as of Oct 6. Context: the NHC season count to Oct 4, per CiberCuba, is eight named storms and no hurricanes.
For exposure: Universal Insurance Holdings (Florida) and Gulf-exposed reinsurers should be checked against the next NHC advisories and any watches; no carrier or modeler figures exist yet.
