OUSD has until Oct. 8 to find $30 million in cuts or risk its budget
A big council meeting lands Tuesday, and OUSD is up against an Oct. 8 budget deadline. I found no new Oakland tenant-rule vote this week, and the Oakland Rent Adjustment Program page was not directly opened, so no rent figure is reported.
The 30-second version
OUSD must act by Oct. 8 on about $30 million in cuts, per KALW reporting.
Oakland City Council meets Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m.: near-transit zoning hearing, data center moratorium, greenway contract.
BART runs no Green Line on Sunday, Oct. 18; San Leandro–Bay Fair is single-tracked.

OUSD faces Oct. 8 deadline to find $30 million in cuts
The Alameda County Office of Education conditionally approved Oakland Unified's 2026-27 budget on Sept. 15, KALW reported. The county says the district must cut an additional $30 million. The district has a few weeks and must act by Oct. 8; the county then has one month to approve the budget.
Board member Mike Hutchinson, the lone 'no' vote in June, told KALW the delay was a mistake. Board President Jennifer Brouhard said restructuring has left the district stronger. OUSD's Budget and Finance Committee discussed the conditional approval on Oct. 1; the agenda item and documents are linked below.
For parents: the cuts to be named by Oct. 8 could reach school budgets, so watch board agendas and use the district's comment process.
Council holds Oct. 6 hearing on near-transit zoning rules
At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, the council will hold a public hearing and consider adopting changes to the S-8 'Abundant and Affordable Homes Near Transit' (SB 79) zone. The changes respond to state housing department comments and exclude additional industrial parcels. The Planning Commission recommended them; a supplemental report was posted Oct. 1. This is a proposed ordinance, not yet adopted.
The agenda says public comment is taken on each action item by speaker card, and the online request-to-speak window has expired. Observers can watch on KTOP Channel 10 or Zoom. I did not verify which Temescal-area parcels, if any, are affected.
For renters near BART: check the staff report's zoning maps for your block, and submit a speaker card in person if you want to comment.
Data center moratorium needs seven votes; greenway contract grows $4.19 million
The council's Life Enrichment Committee approved a proposed 45-day data center moratorium, which goes to the full council Oct. 6, the Daily Californian reported on Sep. 28. It needs seven votes because it is an urgency measure. The Oakland Observer notes the agenda lists it on consent despite the committee's direction to hear it as non-consent.
Also on the agenda is item 5.3, raising the contract for the 19th Street BART to Lake Merritt greenway by $4,185,426.69, to a not-to-exceed $10,624,575.44. Mayor Barbara Lee's State of the City address is item 5.1. These are proposals until voted.
For BART commuters: the greenway runs from 19th Street BART, so cost and schedule are worth watching; attend Tuesday or use the eComment link on the council calendar.
BART says crews will manage vegetation between San Leandro and Bay Fair on Sunday, Oct. 18, working until 6 p.m. with 25–30 minute delays in the area. There will be no Green Line service all day, but BART will serve all 50 stations.
BART suggests East Bay riders take the Orange Line and transfer at Bay Fair to a Blue Line train. Orange and Blue trains will be extended from six to eight cars. The notice was posted Oct. 1.
For BART commuters: if a weekend trip uses the Green Line, plan on the Orange-to-Blue transfer at Bay Fair and allow extra time.
