The new W-2 overtime box (code TT) turns year-end payroll accuracy into your workers' tax refund

No company was named, so these ideas are written for a B2B payroll SaaS selling to US small-business owners. This week's attention: year-end W-2 changes, 2027 deposit schedules, a competitor's compliance push and small-firm hiring data.

The 30-second version
  1. IRS W-2 code TT for qualified overtime starts with tax year 2026 and makes payroll accuracy the employee's deduction.
  2. Gusto launched Business Compliance, HR Partners and a PEO on Oct 1, putting compliance at the centre of payroll marketing.
  3. ADP's Sept report shows 23,000 jobs at 1-19 and 20-49 employee firms combined; the IRS CP136 lookback window closes the quarter.

W-2 box 12 code TT: employers must report qualified overtime

Starting with tax year 2026, employers must report qualified overtime compensation on Form W-2, box 12, code TT, according to a Coruzant explainer (Oct 1) summarizing IRS Fact Sheet FS-2026-13. The deduction is capped at $12,500 per return ($25,000 joint) and applies only to the FLSA-required premium above the regular rate. Employees can only claim what the W-2 shows, so an understated figure needs a W-2c to fix. Greenshades' Oct 2 compliance roundup also lists TT as a new W-2 code.

Small owners with hourly crews and bonuses will ask whether their payroll system can isolate that premium. You can credibly publish a plain-English guide to how your product calculates regular rate and flags FLSA-exempt staff; avoid claiming tax outcomes for employees. Caveat: the Coruzant piece is secondary reporting; link readers to the IRS fact sheet.

Gusto adds compliance tool, HR advisers and a PEO

Gusto launched Gusto Business Compliance, a senior-HR-leader program and its own PEO on Oct 1, HR Brew reported. Business Compliance covers state tax registration, government mail tracking and annual reports, at $85 per state per month for Simple and Plus plans. Gusto cited a 2024 US Chamber survey in which 51% of small businesses said regulatory compliance hinders growth; HR Brew notes more than 500 PEO vendors operate in the US. These are Gusto's own claims and positioning.

Payroll is being sold as compliance help. Without copying a competitor, a payroll SaaS can publish an honest buyer's guide on what to expect from payroll versus compliance add-ons versus a PEO, using only features you actually ship.

Post to write: a comparison-style explainer, 'Payroll, compliance add-on or PEO: which does a 10-person business need?', with a decision flowchart.

CP136 notices will set 2027 deposit schedules: $50,000 lookback line

A Beancount.io guide (Oct 4; an accounting-software vendor, so secondary) explains that IRS Notice CP136 assigns the 2027 deposit schedule from Form 941 liability for July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026. Above $50,000 means semiweekly deposits; $50,000 or less means monthly. It also flags a $100,000 next-day rule and tiers of failure-to-deposit penalties from 2% to 15%.

Growing small employers are the ones who get flipped and miss it. You can publish a 'did your payroll growth flip you?' calculator or checklist built on your own deposit-schedule settings; send readers to IRS Publication 15 to confirm.

ADP: small firms added 23,000 jobs in September; base pay up 3.2%

ADP's National Employment Report (released Sep 30) put September private-sector job growth at 90,000, with establishments of 1-19 employees adding 18,000 and 20-49 employees adding 5,000. Base pay for private-sector workers rose 3.2% year over year, per ADP Pay Insights. The data comes from anonymized payroll records covering more than 26 million workers; ADP is a payroll competitor, so label it as vendor data.

Owners hiring now face year-end onboarding, W-2 and wage-cost questions. A payroll SaaS can add its own anonymized trends only if it has actually published them.

Maryland FAMLI declaration due Nov 15; deductions start Jan 1

Greenshades' Oct 2 roundup says Maryland FAMLI payroll deductions begin Jan 1, 2027, and that between September and Nov 15, 2026 employers must declare whether they will use the state plan or a private plan. It also lists Massachusetts PFML deduction changes for employers with 25 or more employees on Jan 1, 2027. Single secondary source (a payroll vendor); check state agency pages before publishing.

Multi-state hiring is common among small businesses, and state paid-leave setup is a payroll task. A state-by-state year-end calendar fits a payroll brand.

Post to write: a downloadable 'Q4 state payroll changes' checklist and blog post, linked to official state pages.

Plan ahead for the Nov 2 Form 941 Q3 filing deadline (per a TaxZerone notice) and the Maryland FAMLI Nov 15 declaration deadline; verify both with the IRS and the state.
