Intro Data Analytics (10 weeks) vs UK Junior Analyst Demand: Add Power BI and Stakeholder Communication, Strengthen SQL
Interpretation: I read "junior data analyst roles, UK" as permanent UK data analyst adverts, benchmarked against one published UK advert-frequency dataset, the O*NET occupation entry, and the three named competitors. No official exam syllabus exists for this target, so none was used. Recommendations are for you to confirm.
Coverage summary: I did not hand-count 30 or more individual postings, so the demand column uses published aggregate frequencies, not my own n-of-N count. The source is ITJobsWatch "Data Analyst" skill co-occurrence for the six months to 1 September 2026, as reported by Uptrail. The page is dated 16 August 2026 but says its window ends 1 September 2026, an inconsistency I could not resolve. It is a single secondary report, and Uptrail sells a competing programme, so treat it as one source. Competitors: Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, General Assembly Data Analytics bootcamp, Open University TM111. Frameworks: O*NET only (SFIA and UK qualification frameworks not checked).
Gap table
Demand figures are "% of UK data analyst adverts" from Uptrail citing ITJobsWatch, 6 months to 1 Sept 2026 unless stated. Competitor coverage is "k of 3". TM111 is a general computing module, so it is counted but flagged as a weak comparator.
| Topic/Skill | In course? | Evidence of demand | Recommendation | Priority | Source links |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SQL (SELECT/WHERE, joins; wks 4 to 5) | yes (basic) | 56.0% of adverts, the top skill; competitors 2 of 3 (Google, GA) | Keep and deepen: add GROUP BY, subqueries, window functions. The source says depth with joins, group-bys, subqueries and window functions clears the bar for most junior roles | high | Uptrail, Google cert, GA |
| Power BI (wk 9 dashboards, tool not named) | partial (inference: outline names no tool) | 49.2% of adverts; Tableau 39.5%; GA lists Power BI and Tableau (1 of 3); Google teaches Tableau | Update: make wk 9 Power BI-based; keep one Tableau comparison optional | high | Uptrail, GA |
| Business intelligence / dashboards (wk 9) | yes | "Business intelligence" 50.5% of adverts; Google has a Tableau/dashboard course | Keep; add KPI definition and stakeholder-driven design | high | Uptrail |
| Python / pandas (wk 8) | yes (1 week) | 45.8% of adverts, but the source says few juniors lose offers for lacking it; GA 1 of 3 teaches Python; Google teaches R, not Python | Keep; tie to a purpose (automating a report, messy files) | med | Uptrail, Google FAQ |
| Excel (wks 1, 3, 7) | yes (3 weeks) | 44.5% of adverts; Google and GA both cover spreadsheets/Excel (2 of 3) | Update/trim: three weeks is heavy against SQL's 56%; merge wk 7 charts into dashboards week | med | Uptrail, GA |
| Pivot tables (wk 3) | yes | No advert share found; Google lists "Pivot Tables And Charts" among the skills of its course 5, which also covers SQL (1 of 3) | Keep, shorten | low | Google cert |
| Communication / stakeholder skills | no | Communication 43.9%, stakeholder management 5.5%; Google lists stakeholder communications and data storytelling (1 of 3) | Add: a presenting-findings thread in wk 9 and capstone | high | Uptrail, Google cert |
| Data cleaning / data quality (wk 6) | yes | Data quality 13.2% of adverts; Google (cleaning, validation) and GA (SQL cleaning) 2 of 3 | Keep; add validation checks | med | Uptrail, Google cert |
| AI-assisted analysis and checking AI output | no | "AI" 39.6% of adverts (employer meaning varies); Google's only AI-specific course on the page is job-search focused (0 of 3 found for analysis use) | Add: short module on using AI assistants and verifying their output | high | Uptrail, Google cert |
| Descriptive statistics (wk 2) | yes | No advert share found; GA lists statistics and maths (1 of 3); source says averages, medians, distributions, significance and correlation vs causation cover most day-to-day work | Keep; add correlation vs causation | low | Uptrail, GA |
| Charts in Excel (wk 7) | yes | Visualisation 7.2% of adverts; Google covers visualisation; GA lists Tableau and Power BI (coverage inferred) | Cut as standalone; fold into dashboard week | low | Uptrail |
| Cloud (Azure) | no | 37.3% of adverts (tool-specific); competitors none found | Do not add; mention only | low | Uptrail |
| Capstone (wk 10) | yes | Google has a capstone case study; GA promises a portfolio (inference: 1 to 2 of 3) | Keep; make it SQL + Power BI + written recommendation | med | Google cert, GA |
Top 5 changes
- Move wk 9 dashboards to Power BI. It appears in 49.2% of adverts against Tableau's 39.5% (Uptrail). Place: replace wk 9 content and absorb wk 7 charts. Displaces: Excel-only charting.
- Deepen SQL. SQL is the top skill at 56.0%, and the source names group-bys, subqueries and window functions as the bar. Place: insert after wk 5 (a new SQL aggregation and subquery week). Displaces: one of the three Excel weeks (merge wk 7 into wk 9).
- Add a stakeholder communication thread. Communication appears in 43.9% of adverts. Place: merge into wk 9 and wk 10 (one-sentence findings, short presentation). Displaces: nothing if built into the capstone.
- Add AI-assisted analysis with verification. 39.6% of adverts mention AI; the source says the real skill is validating plausible-looking wrong output. Place: merge into wk 6 data cleaning and wk 8. Displaces: a portion of pivot-table time.
- Anchor Python to a task. Keep wk 8 but make it automate a repeated report, since Python is in 45.8% of adverts yet rarely decisive for juniors. Place: wk 8. Displaces: generic syntax tour.
Competitor topic titles
| Course | Topic titles recorded | Fit note |
|---|---|---|
| Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate (8 courses, 180+ hours, 6 months at 10 hours a week; page showed "Starts Oct 5") | Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere; Ask Questions to Make Data-Driven Decisions; Prepare Data for Exploration; Process Data from Dirty to Clean; Analyze Data to Answer Questions; Share Data Through the Art of Visualization; Capstone; Accelerate Your Job Search with AI | Teaches R, not Python, per its FAQ; tools are spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau, R; US employer framing |
| General Assembly Data Analytics bootcamp (full-time 12 weeks, part-time 32 weeks) | SQL; Tableau; Python; Power BI; statistics and maths; Excel analysis | Page lists skills, not a week-by-week syllabus; UK edition not separately confirmed |
| Open University TM111 | The digital world; Creating solutions; Connecting people, places and things | General computing module (Scratch, Audacity), not data analytics; final intake October 2026, replaced by TM110 with Python from April 2027 |
Currency and framework checks
- O*NET: the closest entry I opened is Data Scientists 15-2051.00, updated 2026, listing Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power BI among technologies. It is a data scientist code, so it is only a loose proxy for junior analyst; I did not find a closer code.
- Python in Excel: Microsoft's availability page shows it needs a paid Microsoft 365 licence on supported builds and is not in free or perpetual licences, so do not make it a required lab.
- Excel versions, pandas version, Power BI release status: not verified this run.
Do next
- Hand-count 30 or more UK junior postings (Indeed, Reed, LinkedIn) from the last 90 days to confirm Power BI vs Tableau and pivot table, joins and statistics shares, which the aggregate lacks.
- Obtain a closer UK benchmark (SFIA data analyst skills, apprenticeship standard) and add clause references.
- Read GA's UK syllabus PDF for week-level topics.
- Pick a better UK comparator than TM111 (it ends October 2026).
Near misses
- Tableau (39.5%): above the 10% threshold but secondary to Power BI in the UK source; Google and GA teach it.
- Data modelling (6.5%), DAX and Power Query (each under 2%): low explicit mention; the source says employers assume them.
- Business intelligence 50.5% vs Power BI 49.2%: likely overlapping labels, so I did not treat them as independent skills.
Coverage note
Open University's main module page and a Medium 500-posting analysis returned 403 and were not read; the OU module description page was read instead. No job board was searched directly. No SFIA or UK qualification framework entry was fetched.
