Fantasy Weekly: NFL ESPN 12-team half-PPR

Mahomes is on bye in Week 5, so your superflex slot needs a plan

Assumptions: ESPN default half-PPR, superflex, $100 FAAB; 'Week 5' = the games after Week 4 wraps tonight. Sources I could not open or confirm are flagged below; Bijan's Week 5 opponent and Sunday kickoff times were not found.

The 30-second version
  1. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are on bye in Week 5; Chiefs return Oct 18 vs Chargers.
  2. CeeDee Lamb (thigh) was estimated as a full participant Monday after 17 catches for 189 yards.
  3. Will Shipley is the top RB pickup if Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby are out.
01Patrick Mahomes · Oct 4

Mahomes is on bye; Chiefs' WR room is thin

Kansas City beat the Raiders 30-27 on Oct 4 and is off in Week 5; the AP says the Chiefs host the Chargers on Oct. 18 (AP, Oct 5). I found no injury designation for Mahomes in the sources I opened.

Matchup/context: WR Tyquan Thornton dislocated an ankle, which the AP says effectively ends his season. Rashee Rice strained a hamstring but the AP says it is not considered serious. The AP lists Xavier Worthy as the only other reliable receiver, and Kenneth Walker III rushed for 177 yards in the win. Rumor: the AP notes Tyreek Hill's agent has said Hill could be ready in November; nothing is confirmed.

For your lineup: Mahomes can't score in Week 5; claim a superflex QB2 now and expect a lower-weapon Chiefs offense when he returns Oct 18.

02CeeDee Lamb · Oct 4

CeeDee Lamb's thigh looks fine after a 17-catch day

Lamb caught a career-high 17 passes for 189 yards and the game-winning TD in Dallas' 34-30 win at Houston on Oct 4, and has 498 receiving yards through four games, a Cowboys record (The Athletic via NFL.com, Oct 4).

Status: on the estimated Monday injury report Lamb (thigh) was listed as a full participant; the Cowboys did not actually practice (Pro Football Talk, Oct 5). Matchup: Dallas plays Thursday night against the Buccaneers at AT&T Stadium (kickoff time not confirmed in my sources). George Pickens' presence has helped open things up for Lamb, per the same Athletic piece. In half-PPR the catch volume is a bonus, not the main driver.

For your lineup: Start Lamb Thursday; check the Wednesday report only if the thigh designation changes.

03Sam LaPorta · Oct 4

Sam LaPorta's 13 targets set up a soft Cardinals matchup

LaPorta posted a season-high 22.4 PPR points on 8 catches, 13 targets, 84 yards and a TD in Detroit's loss to Carolina, and his target share jumped to 25.5% from 12.9% in Week 3 (Draft Sharks, Oct 5). His 13 targets are a career regular-season high.

Matchup: the Lions face Arizona in Week 5, a defense that had allowed the sixth-most points to TEs entering Week 4, per Draft Sharks. Note: the 22.4 is PPR; in half-PPR it is lower (about 18 by my math from 8 catches: subtract 4).

For your lineup: Call: start LaPorta in Week 5 (Medium confidence); one big game after a 12.9% share week means the floor is still volatile.

04Jaylen Warren · Oct 5

Jaylen Warren keeps the lead role while Dowdle's status is open

Pittsburgh has leaned on Warren with Rico Dowdle sidelined. Mike McCarthy said Dowdle 'had a good workout, I think it was Friday' but 'I don't have a status on Rico for this week' (SteelerNation, Oct 5). Rumor: a CBS/RotoWire headline says Dowdle 'could play Week 5'; I did not read the body.

Role: McCarthy said he sees Warren and Dowdle as a 'one-two punch' and wants to get Warren 'the ball as much as we can', so expect Warren's workload to shrink once Dowdle is back. Steelers' Week 5 opponent was not confirmed in my sources.

For your lineup: Call: add Warren if he's available, bid about 12% ($12), Medium confidence; value is capped when Dowdle returns.

05Roster · Oct 5

Start/sit: Lamb and LaPorta in, Mahomes out, Bijan on watch

Call: Start CeeDee Lamb (Thursday vs Tampa Bay; matchup strength not verified), High. Start Sam LaPorta (vs Arizona; soft per Draft Sharks), Medium. Sit Patrick Mahomes (bye, nothing to decide), High.

Call: Start Bijan Robinson, High. Atlanta plays New Orleans on Monday night (Oct 5); PFN ranked him RB2 for Week 4 at 26.3 touches per game (Oct 4). I found no injury designation for him, and I did not find his Week 5 opponent. Jaylen Warren: Medium flex if Dowdle is out, Low if he returns.

For your lineup: Fill the QB2/superflex slot from waivers before Mahomes' bye makes the options thinner.

06PFN waiver column · Oct 5

Waivers: Shipley first, Brissett as superflex QB stopgap

Will Shipley (RB, PHI, 1% rostered): Saquon Barkley has a hamstring strain and Tank Bigsby was hurt late, so Shipley may be Philadelphia's only healthy back; PFN called him the top pickup (Oct 5). Call: bid 15% ($15), Medium. If Bigsby is cleared he would start ahead of Shipley.

Jacoby Brissett (QB, ARI, 16% rostered): 35 pass attempts in Week 4 and a home game vs Detroit next; PFN rates him a viable streamer. Call: bid 6% ($6) as your Mahomes-bye QB, Low-Medium. Jameis Winston (4%) is a desperation fallback (bid $1). Keaton Mitchell (RB, LAC, 35%): 10 carries and 6 targets in Week 4; Call: $3, Low.

For your lineup: Submit Shipley and Brissett claims, but check Barkley/Bigsby news before waivers run.

07Schedule · Oct 5

Key dates: Falcons tonight, Cowboys Thursday, Chiefs off

Falcons at Saints is Monday Night Football on Oct 5 (Bijan). The Cowboys play Tampa Bay Thursday night (Oct 8) at AT&T Stadium (Lamb). Chiefs are on bye and return Oct 18 vs the Chargers (Mahomes). Lions (LaPorta) face the Cardinals in Week 5.

Not found: exact kickoff times and ESPN waiver processing time for your league. Check league settings.

For your lineup: Set Lamb for Thursday before it locks, and confirm your waiver run time in ESPN.

Watch Wednesday's Cowboys report for Lamb's thigh and Barkley/Bigsby news ahead of your waiver run.
