Solid-State Battery Electrolytes Patent & IP Weekly (5 October 2026): Toyota Builds a Sulfide Supply Chain, QuantumScape Licenses a Ceramic Separator

Executive Summary

This edition could not confirm any new Toyota or QuantumScape electrolyte filing or grant dated 21 September to 5 October 2026. The patent-search connector failed on every query, so the filing evidence below comes from public patent pages found through web search. Treat the patent list as a sample of recent grants, not a complete weekly census. The most recent relevant document I could confirm is a Toyota grant from 12 May 2026.

The two companies appear to protect different things, judging from a small sample. One Toyota grant claims a sulfide solid electrolyte cell and the other addresses cell stacking, and Toyota's commercial moves lock in materials supply. One QuantumScape grant covers ceramic tape casting and the other covers processing apparatus, and its business model is to license that know-how to partners. Both are tied to partner timelines: Toyota and Idemitsu aimed at commercial all-solid-state batteries in 2027 to 2028, while QuantumScape's partner start of production is discussed around 2029 (a trade-press analysis, not a company statement).

The main complication for this week is licensing economics. QuantumScape cut its maximum PowerCo collaboration payments to about $75 million from about $131 million, and the $130 million royalty prepayment is still contingent on starting the licensing phase. For anyone doing freedom-to-operate (FTO) work, the practical point is that I found no sign of claim overlap in the four documents sampled (QuantumScape claim text was not retrieved), but both companies' grants sit under the same CPC subgroup, H01M 10/0562 (solid electrolytes).

Toyota US 12,614,728, claim reading. Independent claim 1 requires four things together: a Si-containing anode active material, a sulfide solid electrolyte, a molten salt melting at 30 to 80 °C that is Li-FSA and Cs-FSA, and a current collector that sulfidates. The example reports a resistance increase of 1.16% after 100 cycles versus 1.25% for the comparison cell without the molten salt, a small difference. Narrow claim language (named salts, Si anode) leaves room for design-around: a non-Si anode, a different salt pair, or a collector that does not sulfidate would fall outside the literal claim. Doctrine of equivalents risk and prosecution history were not reviewed, so this is a first-pass reading, not an FTO opinion.

QuantumScape. The two grants I could open show process-side coverage: ceramic tape casting (12,469,876) and processing equipment (12,533,869). Claim text was not available in the previews, so I make no claim-scope statement for them. The listed CPC for 12,469,876 includes H01M 10/0562, the same subgroup as both Toyota grants above.

Toyota: a materials supply chain around sulfide electrolytes

Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan began collaborating on mass-production technology for sulfide solid electrolytes in October 2023. Idemitsu plans a plant with capacity of "several hundred metric tons", and Toyota is also working with Sumitomo Metal Mining on cathode materials. The original roadmap targeted a vehicle with about 1,000 km range and 10 to 80% charging in about 10 minutes (company roadmap as reported by Electrek).

IP implication (my inference): supply agreements and process know-how around lithium sulfide and sulfide electrolyte synthesis are probably held by Idemitsu rather than Toyota. A watch list for Toyota should therefore include Idemitsu and Sumitomo Metal Mining filings, not only Toyota Jidosha. I did not verify Idemitsu's filings this week.

QuantumScape: ceramic separator IP behind a licensing model

QuantumScape's QSE-5 is an anode-free lithium-metal cell built around a ceramic separator. Company-published B-sample specifications are 844 Wh/L and 301 Wh/kg; at a Morgan Stanley event in September the CFO cited 12.2 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge. These are vendor-measured prototype figures.

Key recent business and IP developments:

How the two portfolios compare

Dimension Toyota QuantumScape
Electrolyte type in evidence Sulfide (grant 12,614,728 claims a sulfide electrolyte) Ceramic separator (tape casting, processing)
What the sampled grants cover Cell construction and materials (two grants) Ceramic tape casting and processing apparatus (two grants)
Route to market Own vehicles, with Idemitsu and Sumitomo Metal Mining as suppliers Licensing to partners such as PowerCo
Timing signal Commercial target 2027 to 2028 (roadmap, per Electrek) Partner start of production around 2029 (trade-press analysis)

The sampled grants address different layers (cell construction versus ceramic processing), but I cannot rule out overlap because QuantumScape claim text was not retrieved. That is a screening view only. Neither company's full family, continuation filings, or foreign counterparts were mapped.

Gaps and next week's watch list

KEY TAKEAWAY: The IP picture this week is Toyota protecting sulfide cell fixes while its suppliers scale materials, and QuantumScape protecting separator manufacturing while its licence cash stays contingent. No new in-window filing was confirmed, so this edition is a baseline, not a weekly delta.
