School & Program Comparison

Schools or programs, or area and grade (one per line): UCLA
UC Davis
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Student profile and needs: Senior, GPA 3.8 unweighted, SAT 1400, wants mechanical engineering, prefers mid-size campus

Budget or household details (optional): $25k/yr max, household income $90k, California resident

Mechanical Engineering Comparison: UCLA vs UC Davis vs Cal Poly SLO — UC Davis and Cal Poly lead on fit and cost; UCLA is a long reach

Executive Summary

Interpretation: One senior (3.8 unweighted GPA, SAT 1400, California resident, household income $90k, $25k/yr ceiling) applying for fall 2027 freshman entry to mechanical engineering (ME). Net costs are estimates because no school's net price calculator was run (the brief forbids submitting one).

Summary: UCLA ME is a reach (3.9% admit rate); UC Davis is the most realistic UC option but I found no ME-specific admit rate; Cal Poly SLO is the best match for "mid-size" and hands-on engineering, but its engineering admits skew to very high weighted GPAs and it likely costs the most after aid.

Three facts shape the whole comparison:

UCLA – Mechanical Engineering (Samueli) Public university (UC) Fall 2025 ME: 6,083 applicants, 3.9% admit rate; admits' middle range 4.54-4.83 weighted GPA (UCLA labels these 25th/75th % for admits) UCLA Fall 2025 profile by major. Campus overall 2024-25: 9.0% admit rate collegedata.fyi UC A-G courses; major is considered for engineering (UCLA says major is not considered only for The College) UCLA profile; SAT not considered UC Reach (est.): a 3.8 unweighted GPA is likely below the 4.54 weighted 25th percentile; basis is the 3.9% ME admit rate Scorecard average net price $12,548 (all incomes, 2022-23 vintage, not the $90k band) collegedata.fyi. ABET accreditation: not confirmed for any of the three from a fetched page (see Open Risks). Scorecard figures are 2022-23 vintage and averages across all incomes; earnings and graduation rates are for all majors.

Net Cost: Can Each School Fit Under $25k?

UC campuses (UCLA, UC Davis). UC's published system-wide average cost of attendance for California residents is $49,078 on campus and $48,678 off campus, on a table labeled 2027-28; tuition is $16,278 and campus fees $1,900 (UC cost of attendance). UC's Blue and Gold plan says most California families earning up to $100,000 receive enough grant and scholarship funds to cover UC tuition, and average aid packages include up to $22,000 in grants and scholarships (UC Blue and Gold). Illustrative arithmetic (estimate, not a quote): $49,078 − up to $22,000 = about $27,000 before work or loans, which is above $25k if the full average grant is not received. The Scorecard average net prices ($12,548 UCLA, $14,741 UC Davis) are far lower but blend all income levels, so they do not prove the $90k band lands under $25k. I could not retrieve campus-specific COA or net price by income band.

Cal Poly. The published 2026-27 on-campus COA for the College of Engineering is $44,144 (residence hall $41,342; living with family $35,380), including $15,720 tuition and fees (Cal Poly 2026-27 costs). Cal Poly's Scorecard average net price is $16,665 (collegedata.fyi). Whether Blue and Gold-type tuition coverage exists at Cal Poly was not found; the family should run Cal Poly's net price calculator (Cal Poly cost pages). Eligibility for Cal Grant and other state aid is for each aid office to rule on; I make no ruling.

Caveat on staleness: the UC cost table's "2027-28" label differs from the other cost tables I retrieved (Cal Poly 2026-27), so the years are not strictly comparable.

Ranked Shortlist

  1. UC Davis ME: the likeliest admit of the three on campus-wide numbers (42-46% admitted), covered by UC's income-linked aid, and has a required capstone. Weakness: large campus, and ME-specific odds unknown.
  2. Cal Poly SLO ME: best on mid-size preference and hands-on identity; engineering-wide selectivity is about 23% and costs may exceed $25k without aid. Apply as a strong target-or-reach.
  3. UCLA ME: lowest net price by Scorecard average and strongest outcomes data (93% graduation), but a 3.9% ME admit rate makes it a lottery ticket; apply only if you also have likelier options.

Questions to Ask on Visits or of Admissions

  1. UCLA: what share of Samueli ME admits come from the unweighted GPA range of 3.7-3.9, and how is capped weighted GPA calculated for engineering?
  2. UC Davis: what is the fall 2025 admit rate for the ME major, and is engineering reviewed differently from the rest of the campus?
  3. Cal Poly: are SAT scores used at all in selection, and how does the ME major's selected GPA range compare with the college-wide 4.14-4.25?
  4. Cal Poly: what grant aid does a California family at $90k typically receive, and does it cover tuition?
  5. All three: what percent of ME students complete a paid internship or co-op, and how does the program help find one?
  6. UCLA and UC Davis: how large are lower-division engineering classes, and how accessible are professors given the campus sizes?
  7. All three: is the ME program ABET-accredited, and what is the ME-specific four-year graduation rate?
  8. All three: what is the realistic total cost for an ME student including housing in year 1 versus later years?

Do Next

  1. Run each school's net price calculator (UCLA, UC Davis, Cal Poly) with the $90k income to replace the estimates here.
  2. Get the weighted, capped UC GPA from the school counselor and compare it with UCLA 4.54-4.83 and Cal Poly 4.14-4.25.
  3. File the UC application (closes Nov 30, 2026) and the Cal State Apply application (Oct 1-Nov 30) before the deadline; add alternate majors at UC Davis.
  4. File the FAFSA or California Dream Act application before March 2, 2027 (UC dates).
  5. Verify ABET accreditation for each ME program in ABET's directory.

Near Misses

Not researched (not named in the brief): other UCs, CSU campuses such as Cal Poly Pomona, or community college transfer routes.

Not retrievable: College Scorecard pages (JavaScript-rendered; I used collegedata.fyi's copy of Scorecard data instead), UCLA ME department page, ABET directory, and ME-specific admit data for UC Davis and Cal Poly. Campus distance was not computed because no home location was given.
