acme.com SEO Audit: A Freeware Site, Not a Project Management Competitor to Asana
Bottom line
acme.com is not a project management software site. It is ACME Laboratories, a personal freeware and tools site that describes itself as purveyors of fine freeware since 1972, on the net since 1991, with pages for a web server (thttpd), a map viewer (ACME Mapper) and small utilities. It has no project management pages, so it has no real position for "project management software" and cannot be benchmarked against asana.com on that keyword without a new content strategy. I audited it as it exists and used asana.com as the reference point you asked for. Access date for all observations: 5 October 2026.
Overall health: the site is crawlable, fast to deliver (static files, a 7,600-byte homepage (Content-Length header)) and already ranks well for its own niche terms. Its on-page SEO is bare, and it is mismatched to your target keyword.
The issues most likely to cost traffic:
- Intent mismatch (Observed): nothing on the site targets "project management software", a term with 165,000 US monthly searches and keyword difficulty 51 (DataForSEO, third-party estimate,
data/dataforseo_results.json). The SERP is held by review sites, not vendor homepages. - No meta descriptions on any of 8 sampled acme.com pages (Observed). Google writes its own snippets.
- No H1 on any sampled page (Observed), and generic titles such as "Software" and "thttpd".
- No canonical tags on 7 of 8 sampled acme.com pages (Observed); only mapper.acme.com has one.
- No structured data on any sampled page (Observed), while asana.com serves Organization, WebSite and BreadcrumbList.
Single highest-impact next step: decide the goal. If the goal is to rank for project management software, that needs a new, separate section or domain with real product and comparison content. For the existing site, add unique meta descriptions and H1s to the roughly ten highest-traffic pages (the software and thttpd pages and the Mapper).
Scope and assumptions
- Domain audited:
https://acme.com/. The HTTP version stays on http://acme.com/ in a browser load and the HTTPS version also returns 200 (browser check,data/browser_dom_checks.json) (Observed); I found no forced HTTPS redirect. - Competitor and keyword: asana.com and "project management software", as supplied. I also tested two terms the site plausibly owns, "thttpd" and "acme mapper", because the supplied keyword has no matching content.
- Sample: 8 acme.com URLs (home, /software/, /software/thttpd/, /maps.html, /updates/, /what_is_acme/, /privacy.html, mapper.acme.com) plus asana.com's homepage. The brief asks for 10 to 20; the site's content is small and uniform, so this is a thin sample.
- Gaps: Google PageSpeed Insights returned a 429 quota error, so I have no Core Web Vitals. I could not read the sitemap (it exceeded the 5 MB fetch limit). No free backlink tool was reachable. These are stated below rather than filled in.
Crawlability and indexation
| Check | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| robots.txt | Present, permissive | Blocks only CGI scripts and temp folders (for example /tmp, /mailto/, /webstats.html); no CSS/JS blocking; no Sitemap line (Observed) |
| XML sitemap | Exists but unverified | Fetching /sitemap.xml failed because the body exceeded 5 MB; I could not check validity or lastmod. Not declared in robots.txt |
| HTTP status and redirects | 200, no redirect chain | Browser load of http://acme.com/ returned 200 with no redirect; server header reads thttpd/2.30 |
| HTTPS | Available, not enforced | https://acme.com/ returns 200; http:// does not redirect to it (Observed) |
| noindex / X-Robots-Tag | None found | No robots meta and no X-Robots-Tag header on the 8 sampled pages |
| Index size | Healthy | A site:acme.com search returned ACME Updates, mapper.acme.com, Software and Build A PC among the top results (DataForSEO SERP); I did not get a page count |
The server header advertises thttpd, which is the site's own software; that is a minor information-disclosure observation, not an SEO factor.
On-page
| URL | Title | Meta description | H1 | Canonical | Words | Issues |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| / | ACME Laboratories | None | 0 | None | 284 | No meta, no H1 |
| /software/ | Software | None | 0 (1 H2) | None | 692 | Title too generic; no brand |
| /software/thttpd/ | thttpd | None | 0 | None | 3,445 | Title is one word; long page, only an H3 heading |
| /maps.html | ACME Labs Maps | None | 0 | None | 273 | No meta, no H1 |
| /updates/ | ACME Updates | None | 0 (1 H2) | None | 7,039 | Very long single page |
| /what_is_acme/ | What Does ACME Mean? | None | 0 | None | 167 | No viewport tag; 2 images lack alt |
| /privacy.html | ACME Labs Privacy Policy | None | 0 | None | 452 | No meta |
| mapper.acme.com | ACME Mapper 2.2 | None | 0 | Self | ~1 | App page; almost no crawlable text; title carries a version number |
Recurring patterns (Observed): zero meta descriptions, zero H1s, no canonicals except on the Mapper, image alt text present on the five homepage images, and an HTML 4.01 validity badge. These are site-wide template habits, not one-off errors. For comparison, asana.com has a meta description, a self canonical, 2 H1s and Organization, WebSite and BreadcrumbList schema (live DOM check, data/browser_dom_checks.json), though 89 of its 181 images lack alt text (my count from the live DOM).
Page speed and Core Web Vitals
| Page | Device | LCP | INP | CLS | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All | Mobile and desktop | Not measured | Not measured | Not measured | PageSpeed Insights API returned 429 "Quota exceeded" |
I will not guess numbers. What I did observe: the homepage is 7,600 bytes of static HTML (Content-Length header) with 5 small GIF/PNG images, and the 7,039-word /updates/ page is the heaviest sampled. Inferred: such lightweight static pages are unlikely to have slow LCP, but this needs a PageSpeed Insights or CrUX run to confirm. The mapper app loads 17 images and relies on scripts, so it is the likelier problem page.
Structured data
- Present: none on any of the 8 sampled acme.com pages (Observed; no JSON-LD blocks found).
- Missing (Inferred, fitting the content):
SoftwareApplicationfor thttpd and the other freeware,BreadcrumbList(the pages already show a "ACME Labs / Software / thttpd" trail in text),WebSiteandOrganizationon the homepage. - Broken: nothing to be broken.
- Not validated against Google's Rich Results Test; SoftwareApplication rich results have eligibility rules I did not check.
Internal linking
The homepage is a flat list linking to dozens of sections, so most key pages are one click deep (Observed from the homepage link list). The software index links to roughly 90 programs with plain-name anchors such as "emin" and "thttpd", each with a short description. Strengths: clean, shallow structure. Weaknesses: anchors are tool names with no keywords like "web server", and the Mapper lives on its own subdomain (mapper.acme.com), which splits signals. The thttpd page also links to old www.acme.com and http:// URLs, which may produce redirect hops or mixed canonical signals (Inferred). I did not crawl for broken links.
Content and keyword gaps
The site's real strength is its niche terms; the gap is the target keyword.
| Keyword or topic | Ranking competitor page | acme.com equivalent | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| project management software (165,000/mo, KD 51, third-party estimate) | Top organic results (DataForSEO live SERP) are thedigitalprojectmanager.com, Freshworks, a Reddit thread, Software Advice and others; Google's AI Overview lists Asana, ClickUp, Trello, Wrike, Smartsheet and Jira | None | Total: no page, no product |
| free project management software (4,400/mo, KD 45) | Not fetched | None | Total |
| project management tool (14,800/mo, KD 51) | Not fetched | None | Total |
| thttpd (KD 0) | acme.com ranks #1, ahead of Wikipedia and GitHub | /software/thttpd/ | None; defend it (title and meta are weak) |
| acme mapper (880/mo, KD 8) | mapper.acme.com #1, acme.com holds #2, #4, #5 and #6 | Mapper | None; but a multi-page spread suggests keyword cannibalisation (Inferred) |
Source for volumes, difficulty and SERP positions: DataForSEO Labs and live SERP calls, run 5 October 2026 (US, English); all are third-party estimates. Note that asana.com ranks for "project management software" terms through its own category pages, which I did not fetch, so I do not list its specific URL as ranking. As a brand term, "asana" has about 301,000 monthly US searches (DataForSEO, August 2026).
Assessment: asana.com is the wrong benchmark for the current site, because acme.com's audience is developers and hobbyists. A fair comparison would use sites such as thttpd's Wikipedia page or other freeware libraries.
Backlink profile signals
Not measured. No free backlink checker (Ahrefs, Moz, OpenLinkProfiler) returned data in this run, and I did not run brand-mention searches. The only signal is indirect: DataForSEO shows pages ranking for "acme mapper" averaging about 82 referring domains each (third-party average across ranking pages, not acme.com's own profile). Treat the backlink profile as unknown. Given the site's 1991 age and its use by major sites cited on the thttpd page, a sizeable natural link profile is plausible (Inferred), but unverified.
Prioritized fix list
| Priority | Fix | Affected pages | Impact | Effort | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Decide whether to target "project management software"; if yes, build a new content section, not a retrofit | New | High | High | Marketing |
| 2 | Add unique meta descriptions | All sampled pages | Med | Low | Content |
| 3 | Rewrite generic titles ("Software", "thttpd") to include descriptive keywords and brand | /software/, /software/thttpd/, others | Med | Low | Content |
| 4 | Add one H1 per page | Site-wide | Med | Low | Dev |
| 5 | Add self-referencing canonicals; clean up www and http links | Site-wide | Med | Low | Dev |
| 6 | Force HTTPS with a 301 redirect | Domain | Med | Low | Dev |
| 7 | Verify the sitemap; split it if over 50,000 URLs or 50 MB, and declare it in robots.txt | /sitemap.xml | Med | Low | Dev |
| 8 | Add SoftwareApplication and BreadcrumbList schema to software pages | /software/* | Low | Med | Dev |
| 9 | Run PageSpeed Insights and CrUX; check the mapper | Home, thttpd, Mapper | Unknown | Low | Dev |
| 10 | Pull a backlink report from a paid or free tool to protect existing links before any redesign | Domain | Unknown | Low | Marketing |
