VIN or make and model: 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE

2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE: Top Safety Pick+ Crossover, Worth About $19,000 to $21,000 Today, With Recalls to Verify

Executive Summary

The 2019 RAV4 XLE is a well-rated, first-year-of-generation compact SUV. It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, though the award applies only to vehicles with specific headlights, and the XLE's standard headlights are not among them. Kelley Blue Book (KBB) puts the Fair Purchase Price at $21,090, with private-party values of $18,290 to $20,690 depending on condition. No VIN was supplied, so this is a model-year and trim profile, not a vehicle history check.

The main caution is recalls. Several campaigns cover 2019 RAV4s, including a low-pressure fuel pump recall that can cause stalling. Any buyer should run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before purchase. Owner complaint patterns (rough 8-speed shifting at low speed, liftgate hinge failures, and 12V battery and infotainment glitches) are real but come mostly from secondary sources, so treat them as inspection checklist items rather than established defect rates.

Specifications and Trim Features

The XLE uses a 2.5L four-cylinder rated at 203 hp at 6600 rpm and 184 lb-ft at 5000 rpm with an eight-speed automatic. KBB's page (for the AWD configuration shown) lists the following.

Item Value Source
Fuel economy (city/hwy/combined) 27 / 34 / 30 mpg KBB
Curb weight 3,490 lbs KBB
Wheelbase / length 105.9 in / 180.9 in KBB
Fuel tank 14.5 gal, regular fuel KBB
Max towing / payload 1,500 lbs / 1,120 lbs KBB
Ground clearance 8.4 in KBB
Warranty (original) 3 yr/36,000 mi basic; 5 yr/60,000 mi powertrain KBB

KBB's standard-features list for the XLE includes cloth seats, a power driver's seat, push-button start with proximity keyless entry, smartphone interface (KBB's review notes standard Apple CarPlay and no Android Auto), and a touchscreen (KBB). The same page also lists heated seats and heated steering wheel under standard features, which looks doubtful for an XLE, so confirm equipment from the window sticker or VIN decode. Original base MSRP for the XLE was $27,450, per CarResaleValue (a listings-based aggregator, not Toyota).

I could not retrieve Edmunds (access blocked) or Toyota's own spec sheet, so these figures rest on KBB alone. I did not independently confirm cargo volume or the FWD versus AWD split.

Safety: Top-Tier Crash Results, Weak Standard Headlights

IIHS rates the 2019 RAV4 Good in small overlap (driver and passenger side), moderate overlap, original side test, roof strength and head restraints, per the IIHS ratings page. The updated, tougher side test gives an Acceptable overall, with a Marginal rating for rear-passenger head protection, because the dummy's head moved past the side curtain airbag and hit the C-pillar hard (IIHS). That finding qualifies the headline award.

Headlights are the biggest trim-specific issue. IIHS lists the XLE trim in a group with LED reflector headlights rated Marginal, while its Good-rated headlights belong to the Hybrid Limited with the adaptive package. The Top Safety Pick+ award therefore does not cover a standard XLE. The standard front crash prevention system (Toyota Safety Sense) scored Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian tests, and lane departure warning and prevention is standard (IIHS). Blind spot detection and rear automatic braking are optional.

NHTSA star ratings as displayed on KBB: overall 5.0, frontal 4.0, side 5.0, rollover 4.0. I did not open NHTSA's own page, so treat this as a secondary report of those ratings.

KEY TAKEAWAY: Structure and crash avoidance are strong; the XLE's standard headlights and the rear-seat side-impact head protection are the documented weak points.

Recalls: Verify the VIN Before Buying

I could not load NHTSA's recall database directly (the recall PDFs returned unreadable binary). The list below comes from two secondary aggregators that report 7 NHTSA recalls on record (CarResaleValue says 7 recalls reported) for the 2019 model year.

Campaign Issue Source
20V682 (fuel system, gasoline; Autojunket calls it 20TA11/20TB02) Low-pressure fuel pump may fail and stall the engine while driving; Autojunket's copy of the recall text lists 2019-2020 RAV4 CarResaleValue, Autojunket (linking the two IDs is my inference)
20V064 (engine and engine cooling) Porosity in 2.5L engine castings may crack and leak coolant (2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid listed) CarResaleValue (ID), Autojunket (text)
20V373 Electric power steering: water may enter (2019-2020 RAV4) CarResaleValue
20V286 Front lower suspension arms may have cracks (2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid) CarResaleValue

Only four of the seven are described in my sources; I did not identify the other three. Recalls apply by VIN and production range, so a given car may not be affected, and completion status is unknown without a VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov.

Market Value: About $19,000 to $21,000 Retail, Mileage Is the Main Lever

KBB's estimated values for the XLE (ZIP 77001, valid through 5 October 2026) are in the table below (KBB).

Condition Trade-in Private party
Excellent $16,590 $20,690
Very Good $16,190 $20,190
Good $15,740 $19,640
Fair $14,640 $18,290

KBB reports the XLE has depreciated $4,180 or 17% in three years with a current resale value of $19,650. CarResaleValue, using listing asking prices, shows a higher level: XLE median resale $21,416, 23.4% depreciation from $27,450 MSRP. The gap reflects method (KBB private-party estimates versus dealer asking prices), so expect dealers to ask more than KBB's private-party figure.

Across all 2019 RAV4 trims, listing prices by mileage band run from $28,590 under 30,000 miles down to $17,486 above 130,000 miles. Listings average about 80,680 miles in one passage and 85,923 in another on the same page, so I would not rely on either exact average. Of 260 listings, 95.5% were accident-free and the average owner count was 2.1. I did not obtain NADA, Edmunds, or Black Book values.

Reliability and Known Issues

Autojunket gives the 2019 RAV4 an 88/100 score (low risk), based on its own model of recall and repair data (a commercial site, not an independent study). It flags three areas: the fuel pump recall, the 8-speed transmission (rough shifts, hesitation at low speeds in gas models), and 12V battery and infotainment glitches. KBB's consumer reviewers rate reliability 3.9 out of 5 from 397 ratings.

NHTSA complaint counts quoted by CarResaleValue total 866 complaints, led by fuel/propulsion (213), engine (139), electrical (87), power train (76) and structure (58, including rear liftgate hinge failures). Complaint counts are not failure rates and span all 2019 trims including the hybrid. I did not obtain Consumer Reports or J.D. Power scores.
